We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage in all of our nurseries, in order to prepare children to make the next step to school with confidence. Our themes and activities are structured to cover all of the important academic content for this stage.
Information about each child’s progress is collated and handed over to their school, when the time comes, so that their first teacher has an accurate starting point in their ongoing educational development.
In the pre-school unit, we aim to prepare older children (3-5 years) for school. As a result, the days are more structured than in the other rooms. We use themes as a stimulus for activities and base the focus of learning on the following Early Learning Goals:
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Communication, Language and Literacy
- Mathematical Development
- Knowledge and Understanding of the World
- Creative Development
- Physical Development
These areas constitute the ‘building blocks’ of learning and the children are involved in a variety of activities including regular library visits, mathematical games, music and language work.
As part of our language and literacy programme we use the same literacy scheme as our local infant schools. The pre-school children also benefit from weekly French tuition and ‘Movement to Music’ classes.
Specifically trained pre-school staff, plan and work to provide interesting, enjoyable and challenging activities for the children. This will help develop their academic and social skills and thoroughly prepare them for the transition to school.
